To reach the cheapest fare to America you have to look for departures either from Stockholm or Oslo. For a bit higher but still very attractive rate you can consider to depart from Copenhagen or Luxenbourg. Your return flight has to be back to Dusseldorf however as the flights with British Airways are routed via London there is a solution to end your journey there and skip last leg London - Dusseldorf.
